Re Special Form Certificates Applied to Old Sources.
Good Morning All,
Could you assist me by commenting on the US
situation involving the transport of Special Form sources..
Radioactive sources with activities which exceed the A2 value, which are
enclosed in a capsule, the design of which is approved as Special Form can
be transported in a type A container. For the purposes of complying with
the transport regulation must a type B container be used if :
1 The Special Form Certificate has expired.
2. If the manufacturer has not imposed a Recommended Working Life(RWL) but
the source is more than 15 years old.
3. If the source is older than the manufacturers RWL.
Can a source older than the RWL be transported as Special Form in a Type A
container when the capsule Special Form approval certificate is current and
the source has been immersion test according to the appropriate ISO
standard.
If you intend to transport pre 1985 nuclear density gauges such as Troxler
or Campbell Pacific must the 50 mCi Am 241 Be neutron sources be removed
from the base of the gauge and transferred to a type B container.
Thanks for your comments.
Best Regards,
Mike Malaxos.
