The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) has an exciting opening 

in its Radiation Physics Department. Please see the following announcement.



Title: Radiation Health Physicist



Duties: Primary responsibility of the Radiation Physics Department lies in the radiological considerations, operational safety aspects, and shielding design of the facility to which the Radiation Physicist is assigned. Work involves close interactions with physicists and beam line designers. Perform shielding and activation calculations, neutron, photon and charged particle dosimetry. Will be involved in design/development of personnel protection and beam containment systems. In conjunction with project physicist present shielding design of new beam lines to Radiation Safety Committee. Participate in initial radiation surveys to verify integrity of shielding design. Will participate in writing Beam Authorization Sheets in conjunction with Accelerator Department Safety Office. Give assistance to experimenters in solving background problems, detector design, measurements etc. Will participate in overall Radiation Safety program at SLAC. in journals and paper presentation at professional meetings is encouraged.



Qualifications: Position requires Ph.D. in Health Physics, Nuclear engineering or Physics. Applicant should have extensive experience in shielding design, dosimetry, activation calculations and safety systems for particle accelerators. Experience with nuclear instrumentation and radiation detection is essential. Strong computer skills (UNIX, PC) and demonstrated experience in shield design with Monte Carlo codes such as EGS, FLUKA, LAHET, MARS, MCNP, etc., are necessary.  Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Applicant must have demonstrated experience working effectively, both independently and within a group, and be willing to work on night and weekends (on special occasions).
