Donald E. Hughes, while a teenager attending

San Jose's Lincoln High School in the 1940s,

Mr. Hughes pursued his interest in mechanics

at California Polytechnic State University-San

Luis Obispo, where he graduated from the

mechanical engineering department with a

bachelor's degree in 1952.

After graduation, Mr. Hughes landed a job with

General Electric Co., where he worked for 42

years.

Mr. Hughes, a longtime San Jose [, California,

USA] resident and nuclear engineer, died of

cancer Feb[ruary 17, 2001] in Los Gatos. He

was 71.

...

His first job for GE was an engineering program

assignment in the jet engine department in

Cincinnati [, Ohio, USA]. The move to Ohio was

a big one for Mr. Hughes who departed from his

automotive tradition of owning Fords and bought

a Studebaker.

...

Mr. Hughes and his wife, Diane, whom he married

in 1953, moved to Schenectady, N.Y. He worked at

the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory.

Mr. Hughes returned to San Jose in the mid-'50s

Asia and included a four-year stint in Tokyo

[, Japan.]
