US Lawyer Fagan to Visit Temelin Nuclear Plant, CTK Reports
Prague, March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Ed Fagan, a U.S. lawyer advising
Austrian opponents in their effort to stop the commercial startup of
the Temelin nuclear power plant, will visit the Czech facility next
week, CTK news agency said, citing anti-Temelin activists.
Fagan should arrive in the Czech Republic on Monday and visit the
nuclear plant Tuesday, CTK reported. Ladislav Kriz, a spokesman for
CEZ AS, the main Czech utility that runs the Temelin plant, said he's
not aware of Fagan's visit, adding the lawyer has never contacted
CEZ.
Fagan, who has represented thousands of victims in Nazi slave labor
lawsuits, called last month on CEZ and U.S.-based Westinghouse
Electric Co., which upgraded the plant to meet more stringent safety
standards, to submit documentation of all the plant's equipment by
March 20. CEZ, which says the plant is safe, refused to publish the
documents saying some of them are confidential, while most of the
documents Fagan is asking for are available to the public, CTK said.
Temelin, located in about 70 kilometers north of the Austrian border,
was started under communism. The first block of the power plant was
completed and put into trial operations in October, sparking protests
from Austria that culminated in border-crossing blockades. Temelin is
scheduled to begin commercial operations in June.
