RE: Idaho Falls SL-1 accident, Jan 1961

David,

Information is also available in a document written by LANL, A Review of

Criticality Accidents, 2000 Revision, LA-13638. The SL-1 Accident is only

one page of the approximately 140 pages, I would be happy to fax it to you.

I don't remember where I downloaded the document from, it's about 3.7 Mbytes

in an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. It does say the reactor building was

seriously contaminated by the reactor water which carried fission products

with it. Dose rates were 500 - 1000 R/h in the reactor building which

hampered the investigation. There were 2 instant fatalities and a third

that died 2 hours later from a head injury.

Hope this helps,

Radsafers,

Could anyone point me in the correct direction for information regarding the

SL-1 reactor accident at Idaho Falls in January , 1961? I understand it

involved a major fission excursion, contamination of the facility, and three

deaths. Perhaps someone out there on the list actually worked on the

response and cleanup. Respond privately if you wish.

Thanks in advance for your help!
