NUCLEAR NEWS FLASHES - Monday, June 25, 2001

INTERNATIONAL NEWS:

--AN ANTINUCLEAR GROUP IN AMSTERDAM IS SEEKING A PRESIDENTIAL PARDON for a

Chernobyl researcher sentenced June 18 to eight years in a labor camp on

bribery charges. WISE Amsterdam today distributed an e-mail petition urging

readers to press Belarus President Alexander Lukachenko to pardon Professor

Yuri I. Bandashevsky. WISE said Bandashevsky's "crime" was nine years of

research "and rigorous experiments" at the Gomel Medical Institute, which he

established. The group said Bandashevsky researched chronic effects of low

doses of radiation in the Gomel region, which suffered substantial

contamination from the 1986 Chernobyl accident. Before his arrest, the group

said, Bandashevsky criticized heavily subsidized studies by a medical

institute close to the health minister in Minsk, which supports the new

official Belarussian policy of removing all post-Chernobyl restrictions on

food.
