Yes - essentially you feed something like natural gas or hydrogen, into the 

fuel cell where the fuel - an electrochemical reaction produces electricity. 

One of my friends, "Helen", got her licentiate thesis on the explosion risks 

(PSA approach) of having hydrogen fueled cars around - bottomline: don't 

worry too much about it but windows may brake.
