Re:cosmic rays,solar flares,etc.

Hi Radsafe people:

    From:  jpreisig@aol.com

There seems to be a fair amount of interest in cosmic rays and solar
flares on this message board lately.  A good source of Health Physics
information on cosmic rays is the book "Accelerator Health Physics" by
Patterson and Thomas.  There is some discussion on Hess' early cosmic
ray work, and 1/E neutron spectra.

A Professional Society which addresses such subjects routinely
is the American Geophysical Union (they have a web page).  Membership
in AGU is only $20.00 (US) annually or so, and you receive subscriptions
to EOS (a weekly newspaper) and Physics Today (all for the $20.00).

The University of Delaware has a fairly active research interest in cosmic
rays, through the Bartol Research Institute.  I'm sure there are many other
such research groups.  Some universities seem to prefer doing cosmic
radiation physics, as opposed to doing elementary particle physics at
US and other particle accelerators.  There are several solar observatories
in Southern California (San Fernando and one run currently by the New
Jersey Institute of Technology).  These are just ones I have some familiarity
with.

AGU journals (various forms of JGR --- Journal of Geophysical Research)
may have many articles on cosmic rays and solar flares.  AGU also has
other journals.

Anyway, enjoy all that reading matter.
