Re: UK regulations
Jeff,
It would help if you could provide a littel more detail and what it is
you are specifically looking for. All Uk legislation from 1987 onwards is
available on the "Her Majesties Stationary Office (HMSO)" web site. You can
look specific parts of the legislation (Statutory Instruments) up (and
download them if you wish) at the following URL www.hmso.gov.uk/stat.html .
This page has a search function to allow you to look for the things that you
want. Unfortunately the situation in the UK is a little confusing. Some
legislation applies throughout the UK and some legislation only applies to
parts of the UK. I am generally familiar with those that apply in England
and Wales and the seperate bits that apply in Scotland, however I have not
looked at any that apply specifically to Northern Ireland. There is a
seperate part of the HMSO web site specifically for Northern Ireland
although this only appears to go back to 1991 (not 1987 as the main section
does), URL
www.northernireland-legislation.hmso.gov.uk/legislation/northernireland/ni-s
rni.html. I have done a brief search to see what legislation there is that
applies to Northern Ireland for Radiation Protection, Environmental
(discharges etc.) with emphasis on radioactive materials and also Transport
of radioactive materials.
The following is a summary of those sections of Northern Ireland (and where
it is applicable UK) legislation that I was able to identify.
Statutory Rule 2000 No. 375
Ionising Radiations Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000
The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (Northern Ireland)
2000
Radioactive Substances Act 1993 [ (6) In the application of this section
to Northern Ireland, the reference in subsection (5) to the Secretary of
State shall have effect as a reference to the Department of the Environment
for Northern Ireland.]
The Radioactive Material (Road Transport) (Northern Ireland) Order 1992 (not
sure if this is the most current set of regs on Road transport of Northern
Ireland, I would have expected something to coincide with the Radioactive
Material (Road Transport)(Great Britain)Regulations 1996 SI No. 1350, which
I'm not sure apply to Northern Ireland)
Statutory Rule 1998 No. 132
Packaging, Labelling and Carriage of Radioactive Material by Rail
Regulations (Northern Ireland
Statutory Rule 1997 No. 249
Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (Driver Training) Regulations
(Northern Ireland) 1997
Environmental Protection Act 1990 (c. 43)
Statutory Instrument 1993 No. 3031
The Transfrontier Shipment of Radioactive Waste Regulations 1993
Statutory Rule 1997 No. 248
Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997
Statutory Rule 1992 No. 260
Road Traffic (Carriage of Dangerous Substances in Road Tankers and Tank
Containers) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1992
Statutory Rule 2000 No. 119
Transport of Dangerous Goods (Safety Advisers) Regulations (Northern
Ireland) 2000
Statutory Rule 1997 No. 247
Carriage of Dangerous Goods (Classification, Packaging and Labelling) and
Use of Transportable Pressure Receptacles Regulations (Northern Ireland)
1997
In addition to the above there are a number of conditional exemption orders
(sixteen I think) for certain types of materials or practices under the
Radioactive Substances Act 1993 which may have specific Northern Ireland
Versions ( these cover Hospitals, Instrument Testing, Phosphatic Substances
and Rare earths, Smoke Detectors etc.)
In addition if you are interested in Medical applocations there are other
regulations to do with administering radioactive substances to patients
(can't remember the name unfortunatley). Although they were I think they
were know as the MARS regulationsm, and also specific regulations to do with
Radiopharmaceuticals.
And finally if you or your activities required some form of Dosimetry this
would have to be provided be an Approved (by the UK Health and Safety
Directorate) Dosimetry Service. These are covered by The Requirements for
Approved Dosimetry Services (RADS) documents. Each Dosimetry service would
be Approved for different dosimetry services e.g. External radiations,
Internal Radiations, Record Keeping, and Emergency dose assessment.
I hope this helps to get you started, If you need any more help on
specifics, or where you might find guidance on different aspects of the UK
legislation let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Regards
Julian Ginniver
