1997 Sandia Study on spent fuel heat-up following loss of pool water



Hi all,

Dave Lochbaum sent me a 1997 study by Sandia National Laboratory of spent fuel

heatup following a loss of water from the spent fuel pool. Among other things,

this study reports:



> 1) "The rupture [of the fuel cladding] temperature for zirconium-based

>       cladding is quite close to the temperature at which the air oxidation

>       reaction becomes self-sustaining, both being in the neighborhood

>       of 850 to 950C" (1562 to 1742F) page 5

> 2) "Fuel melting temperatures are attained after about 12 hours following

>      the drainage of water" from a spent fuel pool that is heated by an

>      entire core discharge from a PWR one full year later. page 11
