1997 Sandia Study on spent fuel heat-up following loss of pool water
Hi all,
Dave Lochbaum sent me a 1997 study by Sandia National Laboratory of spent fuel
heatup following a loss of water from the spent fuel pool. Among other things,
this study reports:
> 1) "The rupture [of the fuel cladding] temperature for zirconium-based
> cladding is quite close to the temperature at which the air oxidation
> reaction becomes self-sustaining, both being in the neighborhood
> of 850 to 950C" (1562 to 1742F) page 5
>
> 2) "Fuel melting temperatures are attained after about 12 hours following
> the drainage of water" from a spent fuel pool that is heated by an
> entire core discharge from a PWR one full year later. page 11
>
> Its in Adobe Acrobat format and 1 MB in size. As usual, pls email me at
mailto:ncohen12@home.com and I'll zap out a copy to ya.
