Re: Testing Radiological Filters

Dave,
Our outage is finished and I am getting to backlogged e-mail. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I also don't know if anyone has responded to you. My radsafe e-mails are often truncated because of size.

First are you testing HEPA filters or adsorber filters. Since you are using DOP and PAO I presume you are testing HEPAs. The NRC has sent several notices about using PAO with thermal generators. Unless the thermal generator has been designed or modified for use with PAO, it can make a great flame-thrower. Probably not what you want.

I suggest contacting companies that make testing equipment for testing nuclear grade filters. These would be:
NUCON International, Inc.
7000 Huntley Road
Columbus, OH 43229-1035 U.S.A.
Telephone: 614-846-5710 Fax: 614-431-0858 E-mail sales@nucon-int.com
www.nucon-int.com
NCS Corporation
1385 West Goodale Blvd.
Columbus, Ohio 43212
Telephone: 614-340-3700

You may want to check ASME N510, Testing of Nuclear Air Treatment Systems for procedural guidance.
Best of luck,

Subject: Testing Radiological Filters

We are looking for acceptable methods of challenge testing radio nuclide filters.  Basically other than "THERMAL" generators; had some bad luck with that.

We have used:  Dioctyle Phthalate   (DOP)
                           Poly-Alpha Olephin  (PAO)

As always Thank You in advance for your comments.
