RE: Disposal of NORM waste

Fred,

USEPA currently has no NORM-specific rad regulations, although they have

been involved in scoping out the extent of the problem in the mineral,

mineral processing, and oil and gas industry for several years now. The

most recent scoping document was released in September of 1997, but was

considered inadequate in many NORM categories. The USGS participated in

updating the document, but the updated version or parts of it have not yet

been released. EPA is presently conducting an in-depth study of NORM in

uranium mining waste on the Colorado Plateau.

The State of California surveyed NORM in the oil and gas industry in 1987

and in the mid-1990s, but did not promulgat NORM regulations for that

industry. For information on NORM regulations that may apply to the mining

industry in California, I suggest that you contact:

Subject: Disposal of NORM waste

All:

Am searching for current guidance on the disposal of NORM contaminated

items (filter cloths and metal parts) from a non-petroleum mining and

mineral recovery operation in California. Would appreciate a response to

the e-mail address below.
