RE: Mechanisms are Needed to Explain Cohen's Data
A great deal of
science involves exploring phenomena that do not seem consistent with known
science. When they finally become well enough understood to say we know
the mechanism, the science on that subject has then become complete (for the
moment). But most of the experimental and analytical effort is focused on
trying to be sure we have accurately described the phenomenon itself. In
such situations, we rarely know the mechanism. After we are sure we know
it, the subject becomes history.
