RE: Article: How I set off the subway radiation meter

I agree completely.  A lot more could be done to reduce patient dose;

patients receive doses far higher in a short period of time than most staff

members I work with receive in their entire careers.

It raises an interesting point, however, in my mind. An aggressive effort

to reduce patient dose might say to patients, who come from all walks of

life and know about radiation from what they hear from their neighbors and

the President - Radiation is dangerous; so dangerous that we have to take

expensive administrative steps to reduce patient dose. There are already

laws to ensure machines work properly, to measure patient dose for each

exam. I'd like to see more effective control of repeat rates, which would

mean better training for techs and tracking of films (which can become lost)

and training of staff to look at what exams have already been done for a

patient before they order the same exam again and again.

It seems apparent to me that the regulators should focus more on the medical

community, than all of the scrutiny the nuclear power industry faces every

day.

Priorities should be patient dose reduction, second hand exposure to others

(sort of

like second hand smoke). The power plants have successfully reduced dose. It

makes no sense to quibble over < 1 mrem at a plant, when the dose to others

from

medical exposure is allowed to occur without intervention. priorities!

Apparently the

AMA lobby is more powerful than all of the various pro-nuclear advocates!
