RE: Degradation of plastic from radiation levels

We have experienced failure of two polyethylene liners in covered water

storage reservoirs. The liners were 0.75mm thick with a surface film of

polypropylene to prevent oxidation. Both liners failed after approximately

12 months service. The manufacturer has rejected a warranty claim on the

ground that the liners were exposed to nuclear radiation from natural

activity in the ground water supply.

Monitoring of the water supply over a period of years confirms that the

water meets the requirements of the guidelines for radioactivity in potable

waters.

I am looking for information on any similar occurrences and whether or not

the failure was attributed to the level of alpha/beta/gamma activity in the

water supply. The calculation of production of free radicals in the plastic

can be readily calculated, but is the production of these free radicals

sufficient to cause such rapid deterioration?

My own opinion is that the most likely cause is some form of chemical

reaction as being the most likely causative agent.

Has anybody got any information about similar occurrences?
