Fuel transportation disaster!

TransCanada PipeLines mainline explodes in Manitoba

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — A section of Canada's main natural gas pipeline

exploded in rural Manitoba late Sunday, sending flames high into the

night sky and forcing nearly 100 people out of their homes,

TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. and emergency officials said.

But there were no injuries, and the blast had not affected service on

the huge pipeline system, which transports the majority of the gas

produced in Alberta to customers in eastern Canada and the U.S.

Northeast, TransCanada said.

...

The cause of the explosion, which local media said left a 328-foot-

(100-meter-) long crater, was not yet known. About 100 firefighters

tackled a blaze that ignited in nearby brush.

People living within an 5-mile (8-km) radius of the blast site left

their

homes, officials said. "The community is still evacuated," Chuck

Sanderson, executive director of the Manitoba Emergency Measures

Organization said Monday. "It's dangerous because of the unknown.

Nobody is sure of how safe it is to be there. That's why the evacuation

is continuing," Sanderson said.

The pipeline carries 5 billion to 7 billion cubic feet of natural gas a

day.

The throughput at the time of the blast was not known, said Herchak,

whose company is the country's biggest pipeline operator.
