Request for expertise on Uranium fire safety

Dear Radsafers -

Can anyone recommend an expert on fire safety considerations

(no flame mail jokes, please) of uranium stored in bulk from a

colleague based at CERN? His name is Charles Nuttall, and

here is his inquiry to us at SLAC:

Gentlemen,

We have a few hundred tons of uranium at CERN which is in storage,

awaiting disposal. It is mainly depleted Uranium but there is also a

significant quantity of natural Uranium. I have been using my

knowledge of Hazard and Risk Analysis Techniques to help our

Radioprotection Group (RP) to do an audit of the storage facilities

and the problem of fighting a fire in the vicinity of a Ur storage

area came up. RP have to prepare intervention plans for the storage

areas, for our Fire Brigade (and that of Geneva) and although we have

some ideas and information I was wondering if you had any experience

of such matters. If you have, I should be grateful for any

information you can give me will be gratefully received.

If you can be of help or know of someone who can be, please respond

directly to Mr. Nuttall at:

Charles.Nuttall@cern.ch

Thanks

Steve
