Re: Quick question re: Acerinox incident
Activity?? - Just speculation at the best of my knowledge: "At the end of
May of 1998 a nuclear incident in the factory of Acerinox in Palmones took
place (the Districts), by the fusion of a capsule of Cs-137 in the furnace
number 1, with an estimation of radioactive activity for the source superior
to 4 TBq, is to say to 108 Ci ( Nuclear Security Council, 4 of January
1999. RG 004. Gutierrez Purification Lopez )."
The radioactive waste generated in the incident were divided in two groups
depending on the concentration of radioactive activity: more than 70 Bq/gr
and less than 70 Bq/gr. The first group was transferred to the Deposit of
Security of the Cabril (Cordova). The second group was stored, "of temporary
form", in 1410 plastic extractions in Acerinox. All the remainders have been
characterized like radioactive by the CSN , only the remainders with less
than 1 Bq/gr of radioactive activity are characterized like conventional.
(Source: Report of the Second Semester of 1998 of the CSN, page 143) .
Decontamination took 5 months, and 50.000 man-hours were necessary to
perform the whole work (20% corresponding to radiological protection
activities). The total collective dose was about 60 man.mSv. Approximately
2000 Ton of low level activity wastes were produced in the decontamination
operation at ACERINOX. (smoke dust 91%, fiber cement panel 4%, refractory
bricks 2%, compressible waste 2%, metallic waste 1%).
Acerinox could be a very good exercise scenario for training, however the
Spanish Authorities didn't spread technical data about, contrary the basic
principle of Safety Culture, to Feedback to avoid recurrence.

Subject: Quick question re: Acerinox incident
Colleagues -
Quick question : can anybody tell me how many curies of Cs-137 were involved
in the May 1998 Acerinox steel mill incident in Algeciras, Spain?
Thanks in advance!
