  Yale University's Office of Environmental Health and Safety has 

  an immediate opening for a health physicist [Environmental Health 

  and Safety Specialist 3] to interview, advise and train Principal

  Investigators and scientists, staff and students on matters related

  to radiation protection. The Health Physicist will directly 

  supervise complex experiments involving radioactive materials and

  other radiation sources, as well as provide technical guidance on

  facility layout, shielding and other requirements for medical x-ray

  equipment and radiation producing equipment [which may in the future

  include a cyclotron and PET scanner]. Assist in the management of

  radioactive waste identification and quantification.  Interpret

  regulations or safety policies/standards for applicability.  Report

  findings and recommend corrective actions.  Manage emergency

  situations. Conduct follow-up interviews and counseling of persons

  involved in accidents.  Conduct dose reconstruction as needed.

  Act as a member of the OEHS emergency response team.  

  Participate in special projects as assigned.



  Bachelor's degree in Radiological Health or a closely 

  related science, two years of relevant professional level 

  experience and a thorough knowledge of appropriate radiation safety

  and environmental rules and regulations [ex. NRC, DOT] required.

  Preferred: Master's Degree in Radiological Health and recent

  radioactive waste handling and neutron monitoring experience.



  Position also requires the ability to work with minimal 

  supervision, to design and conduct training classes and 

  to calculate shielding requirements.

  Well developed training, counseling, organizational and 

  oral & written communication skills.  Ability to handle

  multiple deadlines,  and to maintain complete and accurate

  records. Requires wearing and using PPE for hazardous 

  material handling and emergency response. Periodically perform

  short duration physical exertion in support of a safety 

  investigation or emergency response. Standing, walking and

  negotiating occasional awkward work locations.  

  Possessing/completing and maintaining HAZWOPER certification.
