RE: Berkeley lab found research fabricated

A May 11, 2002, paper," Cross Section Limits for the 208Pb(86Kr,n)293118 Reaction", by Gregorich et al., (http://www.orst.edu/dept/nchem/menu/e118/e118cross.pdf), discusses results from the 2001 experiment and includes a section, "Re-examination of Anomalous Events Chains", on the 1999 experiments.

In the reanalysis section, the following excerpted statements are made:

"This re-analysis clearly showed that neither the three reported chains [1], nor the fourth chain involving a number of 'escape'

alpha particles [2, 3] are in the original binary data files from the 1999 experiments. An investigation into the cause

of these inaccurate reports of element 118 production was undertaken. Because of the absence of surviving analysis

records, a complete accounting of the process leading to the incorrect reports is not possible."

"For the third element 118 chain from 1999, and for the initially reported chain from the 2001 experiments, a search

of computer files associated with the analysis has turned up extensive evidence indicating that otherwise uninteresting

analysis output was edited to produce text files demonstrating the presence of the element 118 decay chains.

This situation is very similar to that reported recently at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung [38] by S.

Hofmann, et al. Actions have been taken to insure the integrity of future experimental results."
