The Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory (Ineel) will

become the nation's leading center for nuclear energy research and

development (R&D), Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced today. The

laboratory will get about $5-million in funding to jump-start the site's

new mission objectives for R&D, he said. The lab, which has been managed

by DOE's environmental management program, will be reassigned to the

Office of Nuclear Energy, Science & Technology. DOE said Ineel will

become a major contributor to such initiatives as Generation IV nuclear

energy systems, advanced reactors designs that could be available

between 2010 and 2030, and to advanced, proliferation-resistant fuel

cycle technology. A transition team of senior officials from DOE

headquarters and the Idaho Operations Office will develop a plan to

carry out the change of Ineel's mission "at the earliest possible

schedule," DOE said. Abraham also directed William Magwood, who heads

DOE's office of nuclear energy, to launch a 90-day review of the U.S.

nuclear energy infrastructure that will identify the facilities and

capabilities needed at Ineel to support the Bush administration's goal

of expanding nuclear energy in the U.S. DOE will work with the Nuclear

Energy Research Advisory Committee, an independent advisory panel, to

conduct the review.

IDAHO FALLS, ID, July 16, 2002 - Speaking to employees of the Idaho

National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), Secretary of

Energy Spencer Abraham announced that the lab is now going to be leading

the Nation when it comes to nuclear energy research and development. To

help get the ball rolling and to help the transition in the mission

realignment, Secretary Abraham said the INEEL would receive an

additional $5 million in funding.

According to the Energy Department, the laboratory, which has been

managed by the department's environmental management program, will now

be reassigned to the Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology,

where it will become a major contributor to initiatives such as

Generation IV nuclear energy systems and advanced,

proliferation-resistant fuel cycle technology. However, environmental

cleanup - a task that lab personnel were facing with the development of

new technologies, will remain a priority at the INEEL said Abraham.

Under this move, the Idaho labs will provide key support to the

expanding international Generation IV initiative; Nuclear Power 2010 (a

joint government/industry cost-shared program to develop advanced

reactor technologies); and investigation of advanced fuel cycle and

transmutation technologies.
