ALARA Design Considerations

Please direct any responses to: john_schmitt@ymp.gov

Question:

We are developing an ALARA program for the design of new facilities that

will handle radioactive material. One proposal is to limit detailed ALARA

design attention to those design activities that involve significant

anticipated doses. Less detailed design attention would be provided for

facility features involving lower doses.

Would appreciate your input on using this risk-informed approach in this

application.

Would also be grateful for thoughts on the shape of this decision

criterion, if it were to be used. The two principal proposals are:

1. detailed ALARA assessments are to be performed for systems that involve

10 person-rem, or more, for the duration of the system's active life

(approximately 30 years), or;

2. detailed ALARA assessments are to be performed for systems that involve

1 person-rem, or more, per year (potentially 30 person-rem during system

life).

Any input on relevant precedent would be beneficial.

Thank you.
