Norm;

I cannot think of a single federal agency that does ANYTHING better than
private industry can (I might accept the military, being x-Navy myself, but
one might imagine what alot of cash and little overhead might
accomplish...).

I respectfully disagree on this one. (& my private rambling, of course)

Qouting Harry, "I respectfully disagree on this one."
Does he consider NIST, USGS, CDC, NIH, etc. to be federal agencies?
Does he consider to be private industry Enron, Worldcom, Global Crossing,
Wall Street analysts pimping for the investment banking side of the house,
and all the other thieves and buffoons recently on display? As an investor,
I'm here to tell you that there is plenty of incompetence and worse floating
around what we call the private sector.
Someone taking less of an ideological knee-jerk reaction to this issue might
note that there are dedicated and competent people in both government and
private industry, but that the organizational missions and the incentives
make some functions of society more appropriate for government and some more
appropriate for private industry. Figuring out which is which is part of
the reason we have the different branches of government and allow citizens
to vote and individuals and organizations (including private companies) to
contribute to political campaigns.
Best regards.
