Actually, if you follow the link to the article on *Cold Reading*
(http://abcnews.go.com/sections/primetime/DailyNews/coldreading_021031.html)
and note the last section you may get an insight in Ruth's concerns about DU
and the *religious* or *worldview* of people. Simply put, it did not matter
to the audience that the cold-reader did not believe that he had psychic
abilities; some of the audience essentially stated hope and the belief that
"we get the signs we need in the way we need them," made the reading real
for them.
