Does anyone have any idea of just how detrimental the existence of free
radicals might be?
If their effects are insignificant, why should they be removed?

As usual, its not the existence but the quantity that matters.
With typical sterilisation doses the quantity due to irradiation is reportedly comparable to that due to other food processing methods like cooking - ie. their effects are insignificant and need not be removed.
