George's Gems

As civility on the list has been a topic of recent on-line and off-line

discussion, George Vargo had a little brainstorm on Friday. George is a fan

of another George (Washington), who in 1746 wrote a short book called "Rules

of Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation". George

(Vargo) and I thought it might be useful to start out every week with one of

the thoughts from this book, just to remind ourselves of some timeless

principles of how to treat one another. There are 110 of them; I found them

on-line at http://www.buchanan.org/h-189.html If I can remember, I'll try

to post a relevant one every Monday for a while. Here's a great one, last

but definitely not least:

110th: Labour to keep alive in your Breast that Little Spark of Celestial

fire Called Conscience.
