The USC Career and Protective Services Department is seeking a Radiation
Protection Specialist II to join its team.
Background:
The Radiation Safety Specialist II is a professional person with extensive
training in research and medical laboratory use of radioisotopes. This
individual is responsible for the management of the radioactive materials
use permit program, management and control of the radioactive material
inventory program, management of the thyroid bioassay program, management
of the instrument calibration and repair program, and participation in the
training program for radioactive material users.
JOB SUMMARY
The ideal candidate will:
*Review applications for new, renewal, and amendment radioactive material
use permits for Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) approval;
*Prepare material for review by the Radiation Safety Committee;
*Directly supervise 1 to 2 Technicians;
*Performs audits of radioactive material use permits to insure compliance
with University policy and institutional license conditions, audits include
in-service training of lab staff to correct problems as they are discovered;
*Manage the dosimetry program, which includes reviewing exposure reports,
performing exposure investigations, completing exposure history requests,
acquiring new personnel exposure histories and performing training to
reduce individual's exposures;
*Manage all aspects of recordkeeping involving radioactive materials;
*Respond to incidents and emergencies and participate in the
decontamination efforts of personnel and facilities;
*Prepare patient rooms for radionuclide therapy;
*Survey and decontaminate patient rooms following patient release;
*Assist RSO with making and issuing departmental policies;
*Participate in teaching training classes;
*Maintain training database for radiation workers;
*Manage instrument calibration and repair program;
*Review calibration records for completeness and accuracy;
*Assist technicians with calibration of difficult instruments;
*Insure instruments are calibrated and returned to laboratories as scheduled;
*Manage thyroid bioassay and urinalysis program;
*Perform QA checks to insure 100% compliance with bioassay policy;
*Insure proper maintenance of bioassay measurement equipment;
*Manage the activities associated with receipt and shipping of radioactive
packages; *Insure compliance with all appropriate regulations;
*Manage x-ray safety program;
*Maintain database on all x-ray producing equipment;
*Insure all x-ray equipment is registered with the State;
*Manage the contamination survey program;
*Insure that all laboratories are inspected according to schedule;
*Review all contamination reports;
*Maintain the contamination database and periodically reviews data for
patterns of contamination; and
*Manage and control the use of campus irradiators.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
*Bachelor's degree with three years of experience; however, combined
education/experience as substitute. Science education/Directly related
experience.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
* Post graduate work or additional specialized training in program area;
*Conversant with all aspects of the program area in a University or Medical
setting.
