High Virus Advisory Warning

There is a new computer virus, named Sobig.f, that is spreading via e-mail

and infecting many users. Because of the way this virus works, it is able

to make the e-mails it generates look like they come from whomever it wants,

which is usually a random address pulled from the infected systems address

book. In some cases, the addressee may be a DOE user. As a result, when the

mail is received by the recipient's company, they determine that it is

infected and send a message to the "sender" informing them that a virus has

been detected. Unfortunately, that warning is received by the "spoofed"

user and not the actual message originator.

If you receive a message that indicates you transmitted a virus to someone,

it is unlikely that statement is correct. You should ignore and delete the

message. It is not necessary to contact your computer support helpdesk or

to report a virus infection.

For questions, you may contact your organization's Help Desk .
