RE: Overtime Will Be Outlawed
What's wrong with unions?
The proposed changes mean that the minmum wage BELOW WHICH A WORKER CANNOT BE CALLED EXEMPT is raised from 7750/year to 21350/year ( I used a 2000-hour year). However, workers need not be employed for a full year for this to take effect, because it is based on a weekly, not annual, wage so that a worker making $11/hour working 60 hours a week for 13 weeks, say, can be called "exempt" (designated a "learned professional" for example) and paid for only 40 hours per week for his or her 13 weeks.
Moreover, the "learned professional" category is a nice catchall. Teachers on nine-month contracts are a good example. A teacher who makes $32000 for nine months, or $820/week, spends 6 to 7 hours a day at the school and at least another 2 hours a day in preparation or grading or parents' nights or other activities. So that is a minimum of one hour a day unpaid because the teacher is a "professional" which amounts to a minimum of 195 hours of unpaid work for a school year. And teachers only got that $32000 because they do have unions.
Contractors have faced this for years.
