DOT HM-230 Final Rule on Trasportation of Radioactive Material
Hazardous Materials Regulations; Compatibility With the Regulations of the
International Atomic Energy Agency; Final Rule Docket No. RSPA-99-6283
(HM-230) was published today.
The mandatory effective date is October 1, 2004 with immediate voluntary
compliance.
Some of the major changes are:
1. Definition of radioactive material for transportation purposes is now
determined by exempt concentration and exempt consignment levels for
individual nuclides rather than a blanket 70 Bq/gram.
2. The Type C quantity and Type C package were not adopted.
3. UN number for excepted packages now required marking.
4. Use of DOT Specification 6L(fissile), 6M, 20WC, 21WC and 1A2(fissile)
expires October 1, 2008.
5. CSI Criticality Safety Index and label.
