The UNH Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) seeks a Radiation

Safety Officer to administer a comprehensive Radiation Protection Program,

including all dosimetry, audit/inspection, training, environmental

monitoring and reporting activities, through oversight of all radiological

safety issues to assure compliance with regulations and policies covering

the use of radioactive materials and machines.

Summary of Position:

The UNH Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) seeks a Radiation

Safety Officer to administer a comprehensive Radiation Protection Program,

including all dosimetry, audit/inspection, training, environmental

monitoring and reporting activities, through oversight of all radiological

safety issues to assure compliance with regulations and policies covering

the use of radioactive materials and machines.



Responsibilities:

Conduct surveys and inspections of University facilities including

laboratories and storage areas to maintain compliance with local, state and

federal regulations. Maintain inventory of radioactive materials possessed

by the University; maintain waste disposal records and other required

records and documentation, and perform inspections and/or leak tests on all

radioactive materials upon receipt and as required by regulation. Coordinate

the orders, receipt, surveys delivery and inventory of all radioactive

materials arriving at or departing from the University; manage the storage

and disposal of regulated waste; package, label, survey, etc., all shipments

of radioactive material leaving the University. Approve, coordinate, monitor

and/or close out facilities, storage sites and field experiments involving

radioactive materials. Maintain various databases for surveys, inventories

of radioactive materials and permits, dosimetry, personnel, and training

pertaining to radiation safety. Interpret policies and regulations dealing

with radioactive materials; identify deficiencies and advise the OEHS

Director on requirements of a comprehensive radiation protection; develop

programs and ensure compliance. Advise and instruct Radiation Safety

Committee, radiation users and other employees on established, new or

revised federal, state and institutional policies and procedures related to

radiation safety. Assist in preparation of required reports to maintain

compliance with federal, state and local regulations; maintain records

required by the regulatory agencies. Review qualifications and grants

authorization to personnel requesting to use radioactive materials and/or

radiation generating devices, and notify the Radiation Safety Committee of

changes in status regarding authorized personnel, lab classifications, and

any other activities of the Radiation Safety Officer. Maintain license and

registrations with the New Hampshire Bureau of Radiological Health. Respond

to accidents or spills concerning radiological materials as needed in

emergency situations.   



Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree in sciences, safety, or related field and three years of

related professional experience or Associate's degree in Hazardous Materials

Management and five years of directly related professional experience.

Professional certification or license that may be required for assigned

program. Knowledge of applicable state laws, regulations, codes and

guidelines as related to program area. Valid driver's license. Must be able

to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary. Sufficient

strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of

program.
