Announcement: UNH Shipment of Biological Materials CertificationCourse

The University of New Hampshire's Office of Environmental Health and Safety is pleased to announce that it is offering a "Shipment of Biological Materials Certification Course." This full-day course (8 AM - 5 PM) will review International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations affecting the shipment of biological materials. This training course fulfills DOT and IATA training requirements for those who ship or receive infectious substances, diagnostic specimens, genetically modified microorganisms, biological products and dry ice. Attendees who pass a final test with at least 80% will become certified shippers of infectious substances. Each attendee will receive the 2005 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), 46th Edition.

This is a great course for those who wish to develop an in-house biological material shipping program, increase their knowledge about the regulatory framework concerning shipments of biological materials or want to refresh their shipping skills. Primary sources of information will be reviewed including 49 CFR, 2005 IATA DGR, UN Model Regulations and DOT letters of interpretation.

Regulations affecting the shipment of infectious substances have been substantially revised for 2005. Major changes that will be effective January 1, 2005 include:

* A new label for Diagnostic Specimens;

* New "Special Provisions;"

* A new format for the Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods; and

* Removal of the risk groups criteria for material classification.
