Re: Apparent Discrepancy in Am241 ALI in EPA-11
The ALI value of 0.006 micro-Ci is the more limiting non-stochastic ALI
which would result in 50 REM CDE to the bone marrow. The table 2.1 value
of 1.2E-4 Sv/Bq is equivalent to the less restrictive stochastic ALI of
0.01 micro-Ci which would result in 5 REM CEDE. In other words, a worker
breathing an airborne concentration of Am-241 will reach the 50 REM organ
(bone marrow) limit before reaching the 5 REM CEDE limit. So in your
example below, the 120 pico-Ci intake would result in 1000 mrem CDE to the
bone marrow and 60 mrem CEDE. The 225 pico-Ci intake would result in ~100
mrem CEDE. I'm not familiar with the DOE regs but I would guess that there
would be a level of exposure (comparable to the 100 mrem level for CEDE)
when organ dose is the more limiting.

Im hoping someone can explain the difference in Committed effective dose
equivalent in table 1 versus table 2 of FGR - 11 for Americium 241.
In table 1.b the ALI (inhalation) is 0.006 micro-Ci. This would therefore
determine a dose of 100 mrem from an intake of 120 pico-Ci.
In table 2.1 the CEDE inidicated is 1.2E-4 Sv/Bq, which translates to
444,000 mrem per micro-ci. This would therefore determine a dose of 100
mrem from an intake of 225 pCi.
Since I work at a DOE national Lab, I am interested in the 100 mrem level
of
exposure to satisfy 10CFR835.
Any guidance on this apparent discrepancy would be appreciated.
