Technically, you can use any various materials to

provide shielding.  Many are composites of more than

one.  Tungsten is in "vogue" as it has become cheaper

due, I believe, to increased production by the

Chinese. However, you have to make up the attenuation

properties of lead with more of the material.

Again, the advantage of using non-lead aprons, gloves,

etc., is the generation of non-hazardous waste.  There

is a disposal concern with lead, not barium.
