Is this your site?  http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~apoulev/

I found it right off using the search criteria you gave. But then, I use Metacrawler, which checks Google and several other sites and integrates the result. This was second from the top on the list it returned.

Google can be "gamed" by someone with time and/or a network of friends. See the term Google-bombed.

Does not appear to be the case. They miss the true site at all and find
both newer scratches and older dead pages with the same text.

 The keywords I used were those I remember a customer had used to
locate me about a month ago: +mca +hpge +truly +digital .
 Out of 4 (2 older and one newer alternatives) all the wrong 3
are found and there is no mentioning at all (and no next page with
search results) of the actual page.

 And don't be surprised if things begin to work again shortly (I have a copy of the
google reply I refer to, of course).

 By the way, the google-bot stopped checking my site
after a customer had found me and contacted me (almost a month ago;
it used to come once or twice a week until then). Another coincidence,
sure.

As soon as you can explain how this could occur I sure will, that's a promise...
