Holy Moly! When I read this, al I could think of was, these guys are done for. Although there is no information provided on the curie content of the source, the symptoms tell me that these guys are toast. It's sad to think that had they been wearing alarming dosimeters or had a radiation professional covering their work, they would have had some indication that something had gone wrong in time to minimize the damage. With blisters, nausea and GI problems that soon after the exposure, my guess would be that they had at least a couple of hundred Rem acute exposure. If they make it, it will be a miracle.
