FW: [ RadSafe ] did everyone get this email?

I live and work in the San Francisco Bay area in California. It is one
of the most culturally diverse environments on the planet. I am
CONSTANTLY, both at work and home, confronted by potential
misunderstandings due to differences in cultural backgrounds, English as
a second language, lack of knowledge of the subject, honest mistakes,
etc. I even recently started dating a very native Philipino lady (talk
about potential for misunderstandings!!!!!) :^)
I find that with patient questioning, respect, and sympathy for their
plight, I can get to the root of their query and help them without
conflict. I know when I first started studying the Bible, I didn't know
enough to ask intelligent questions, and the ones I asked may have
sounded foolish to someone who was much more learned than I. But I asked
anyway, because I wanted to learn. Sometimes I got a reaction like
Franz's which turned me off and I lost all respect for the person. I
persevered anyway. But I REALLY, REALLY appreciated the people who were
patient and understanding and educated me enough in the basics so that I
could ask intelligent questions. Those people TAUGHT me.
There are no stupid questions (except those that aren't asked) but there
certainly are stupid answers. Most questioners here are genuine, not
people trying to ask "gotcha" questions. Those who are are usually found
out quickly and reasoned into silence. And remember, RADSAFE is an
international forum, so don't judge quickly. You DO NOT know what is
confusing the question's content.
I guess what I'm trying to say is be gentle with questioners. Education
is our best ally in fighting the ignorance hampering nuke power and
anything radiation related. And who knows, it might be your son or
daughter who's heard of this list asking the questions.

I think it is a wonderful idea. I feel that everyone should be
encouraged to seek knowledge or information from others without dread of
being personally attacked or challenged as to their right to ask for or
share information based on their background or education. After all, if
they do not have a vested interest in the topic of radiation protection
they wouldn't subscribe. Seeking and sharing knowledge is a great thing.
In my role as an instructor, I have come to appreciate any and all
questions or tidbits of shared information from any participants. I have
found that sometimes it is the questions coming from the least
experienced participant that challenges me the most and gets me to
really think about it.

"I have been on the list serve for many years now. Every time I see
this type of conflict (and there have been many), it seems to be
associated with the same person. I would recommend that the time has
come for the moderator to terminate the privileges of anyone that makes
unprofessional, insulting, and personal posts. Perhaps one infraction
per year could be tolerated, after which the individual would be removed
for a year. I'm disappointed that we as a HP family would tolerate this
element and allow it to generate conflict."
I agree with Mr. Borisky but I would suggest a modification that worked
well on another list that I subscribed to a while ago. When a member's
conduct was judged to be inappropriate by the moderator, the moderator
warned the individual, if it occurred a second time, he suspended the
individual from the list for one month. If inappropriate conduct
occurred again, the individual was suspended for two months, and so on.
Since I've never operated a list, I don't know how much work this is for
the moderator, but my experience as a member was that it has been
effective.
