Required: Bachelors degree and job knowledge at an entry level in
radiological health/health physics.
Preferred: Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Arts degree with at least
30 semester hours in physical, health, or life sciences or a Bachelors
degree in Radiologic Technology from an accredited college or university.
Attendance at FDA Mammography and diagnostic X-ray inspector training
courses. Attendance at USNRC core¿courses is desirable. These includes but
are not limited to: 5 week health physics course at Oak Ridge; 1 week
courses in industrial radiology, well logging, medical uses of radiation,
license review procedures, inspection procedures, and transportation.
Experience in Health Physics and Radiological health measurements,
radioactive materials handling, and in procedures to use radioactive
material in radiation and high radiation areas.
Duties: Perform on-site inspections of radioactive materials licensees to
determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal and storage of
radioactive materials are in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. Seq.
Reviews qualifications of x-ray producing equipment users and calculates
radiation exposure potential to employees and the public. The inspections
must be followed by a written report and recommendation for enforcement
action the first steps of which are carried out by the employee.
Reviews reports by medical physicians, registrants to provide consultation
regarding the adequacy of shielding plans and coordinate requests by and
provide advice to registrants for exemptions or variances. Review
radioactive materials license application and amendment requests and
obtains necessary clarification needed for final evaluation of
applications. Prepare license documents for issuance or written
recommendations for denial. The review is based on guides, regulations and
professional judgment of the employee.
Prepares technical material relative to regulations, licensing guides and
information for licensees/registrants; performs calibrations of radiation
detection/measurement equipment; cataloging of sealed source evaluations;
and special projects as assigned by supervision.
Perform on-site inspections of large and complex x-ray registrants to
determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal and storage of x-ray
producing equipment are in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. Seq. Reviews
qualifications of x-ray producing equipment users and calculates radiation
exposure potential to employees and the public. The inspections must be
followed by a written report and recommendation for enforcement action the
first steps of which are carried out by the employee. These duties will
include providing guidance regarding policies implementing the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) Mammography Quality Services Act (MQSA)
inspection contract, the Health Care Facilities Administration (HCFA)
inspection program and the FDA compliance program.
Participate in section and bureau training activities to improve licensing
and inspection capabilities as well as acting in the capacity of an
emergency response team member for the state.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Describe the physical characteristics of the job as they relate to
Essential Functions.
A valid drivers license is required when operating a State vehicle or a
private vehicle for the benefit of the State. Within six months of
employment, a baseline physical, certification by a physician and
respiratory protection training is required to ensure ability to utilize
personal protective equipment. After employment, annual physicals are
required. Desired - certification or eligible for certification by any of
the following: MQSA State or FDA inspector, American Board of Health
Physics, National Registry if Radiation Protection Technologists, ASRT or
other societies or organizations dealing with radiation protection or
health physics.
