Dale,

Here is Hawaii's individual estimated mean annual radiation dose equivalent
infomation from Ronald L. Kathren's book "Radiation in the Environment"
(1991), Table 4-1, page 87 (pb): 0.6 mSv (60 mrem) terrestrial and 0.9 mSv
(90 mrem) total. Colorado has 1.05/2.25 mSv, and Louisiana and Texas are
the lowest with 0.75 mSv. Internal mean for the entire US is estimated at
25 to 35 mrem annually (page 86).

For comparison purposes some external radiation fields from terrestrial
sources are listed on Table 3-1 on page 40 in mrad/year: Clallam Bay, WA,
24; Kerala, India 1,600; Black Forest, 1,800; Guarapari, Brazil, 17,000 and
"Portion of U.S.S.R", 70,000.

Sincerely,
Don Kosloff

Hello again,

Actually the mean altitude of Hawaii is fairly high, although I will
concede
the population is mainly at low altitude. This is true of a few other
states
as well. I tried to find a quick reference to the natural radioactivity in

Hawaii. Being volcanic it is probably fairly high as well.
