Radsafers,
We all know that the monazite sands in the state of Kerala in India contain
high concentrations of thorium and cause a higher dose to that population.
An Indian friend of mine told me yesterday that Kerala is also known for a
high incidence of goiter (enlarged thyroid). He says that this is due to the
custom of eating lots of tapioca which blocks the organification of iodine
in the thyroid. Thus, the thyroid enlarges in an attempt to make an adequate
amount of thyroid hormone from iodine.
Best regards,
Wes

Right Otto, and Kerala and Guarapari and other sealevel high background
locations.
This correlation needs to look at background and altitude to try to see the
relative contributions.
