Re: Tritium Exit Signs
Roman- We had the same questions a few years ago. One of our new buildings
had tritium exit signs installed that the radiaiton safety office found out
about after the fact. We begin to look at the use of H-3 signs on campus.
As an experiment, a sign was hit with a hammer to see how durable it was-
It wasn't! Luckily, the experiment was done in our rad. lab, but it took
extensive cleanup. We feel the signs should not be located in an area that
may present itself to damage, such as dorms and fraternity/sorority houses.
We have also instituted a policy stating requirements if a sign was to be
damaged. The policy was forwarded to our state regulatory agency also and is
now part of the Radiation Safety Policies. We discourage their use when we are
asked.
Hope this helps-
