From an historical point of view, several of the booklets in
the AEC series on "Understanding the Atom" have sections
dealing with nuclear batteries. These include short
descriptions and simplified drawings. For example, they are
mentioned in the following three booklets (and perhaps
others): SNAP Nuclear Space Reactors, Power from
Radioisotopes, and Direct Conversion of Energy. These
booklets were printed in the 1960's and are now out of print
but they are probably still available in many
public libraries. Another place to check would be the
libraries at one of the national labs such as Oak Ridge or
Argonne.
