HP Program at U of M

A recent message from Dr. Kearfott provided information on the
Radiological Health Engineering program in the College of Engineering at
the University of Michigan. As Dr. Kearfott pointed out, the
Radiological Health Engineering program is offered as a new
engineering-based option in addition to the public health based program
that has been offered in the School of Public Health for the past 40
years. Radiological Health offers broad opportunities in radiation
protection from a public health perspective including nuclear
applications, medical health physics, environmental health physics,
radioactive and mixed waste management, and environmental restoration.
The School of Public Health offers the MS, MPH, PhD, and DrPH degrees,
and varying opportunities for student support which has been obtained
from NSF, DOE, EPA, NRC, and INPO. The program generally requires 16-24
months to complete due to providing a summer practicum to acquire field
experience and a master's thesis to round out the student's particular
areas of interest. Three full-time faculty in radiological health and
four joint appointed faculty in the medical school provide comprehensive
courses in radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation risk, external
and internal dosimetry, medical aspects of radiation, radiation
measurement, environmental assessment, radiation detection and
measurement standards and radiation policies of radiation protection, and
developing research and project skills. This approach has established a
record of producing well-rounded health physicists capable of making
critical decisions on health and safety issues in radiation protection.
More information on the radiological health program at the University of
Michigan can be obtained from either myself, Dr. James E. Martin
(313-936-0763), or for the engineering based option, Dr. Kearfott in the
Department of Nuclear Engineering (313-763-9117).
