The classification scheme for low level waste is prescribed in 10 CFR
61, Section 61.55. This, and the definitions of high level waste and
transuranic waste are the only classification schemes used for final
disposal of licensed materials. Many scheme are used internally for
managent of waste. For example, many licensees are allowed to hold
short lived nuclides for deacy in storage, and they segregate or
"classify" their waste accordingly.
