The question is not out yet, but  part of the answer could be that there
were at least three companies in the Dallas area that did Lens coating
with Thorium. They were Texas Instruments, Optoelectronics, and  LTV.
The process was a true coating in that the lenses and the thorium in a 
metal boat were placed in a vacuum chamber until  the Thorium
evaporated. The inside of the chamber was usually wrapped in aluminum
foil which also became coated with Thorium and which became rad
waste after removal.  Periodically the insides of the vacuum chamber
had to be sandblasted!!
