Re: EMF Health Effects
Reply to: RE>EMF Health Effects
The report was leaked by a disgruntled member who thinks they're going too far.
Key points are:
o Committee 89-3 led by Ross Adey; issued June 13, 1995#000#
o "Epidemiological studies...indicate a positive association between childhood
cancers and exposures to magnetic fields, on the order of 0.2 mT..."#000#
o They propose interim exposure guides:
o Adopt ALARA policy with non-occ' goals of 10 mG and 100 V/m
attained in three yrs. and 5 mG and 50 V/m in six yrs. with
ultimate goal of 2 mG and 10 V/m attainment depending on
socioeconomic considerations (they mention 1 mG in passing)#000#
o Occupational goals of 100 mG and 1 kV/m as time-weighted
average exposure limits#000#
o New schools, day care centers and playgrounds not be built
where fields exceed 2 mG#000#
o New housing not built near existing lines where fields exceed 2
mG for >2 hrs. daily
o New lines not built where home exposures would exceed 2 mG in
existing housing, and#000#
o Design considerations for new offices should seek to keep
exposures from >static - 3 kHz below 2 mG.
I do not endorse their stance; these key points are reiterated here for
information purposes. For a fuller text, please see Microwave News'
July/August 1995 issue.
Those who thought the APS position put this issue to bed - think again!

I just got a letter from Organization Resources Counselors, Inc.
indicating that in the August 18, 1995 issue of Science there is a
report that the NCRP has prepared a draft document which concludes that
some kinds of cancers and immune system disorders may be linked to
electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures. Have any of you read the draft
and/or article and can comment on it? It allegedly makes recommendations
for construction of new housing, day-care centers, etc. and limits of
exposure at some of these facilities (0.2 microtesla). Tell me it ain't
so!
