Re: A couple off-the-wall (unrelated) questions

For our analytical people we require finger rings and badges. Our inspections
of the units consist of a survey of the exterior of the unit to insure it has
not started leaking. We then check the door interlocks to insure either the
tube is shut off or the shutter closes when the door is opened while the unit
is in operation. We also check to insure that any open beam is protected in
such a way that no one could get their hand or fingers in the beam with out
tripping an interlock. This last requirement has resulted in some excellent
devices being devised by the staff of various departments on campus. We had
one unit which was and older camera mount (the type that looks an old sextant)
which was an open beam setup. We designed a small cabinet which fit over the
camera but still allowed normal movement of the sample. The cabinet itself is
interlocked so that the shutter to that port will not open unless the cabinet
is in place. Overriding any safety device or interlock requires written
authorization by the RSO.
