                     HPS Newsletter -- December Issue

     The Health Physics Society's December Newsletter is being prepared now
at the printer. Members of the Society will receive the issue the last week
in November. The issue includes the following:

          Cover Story and Feature Article -- What happens when a Tennessee
couple purchases a box at a yard sale and find that it contains 226Ra?
     
          Guest Editorial -- Richard J. Vetter gives his view on the Linear,
No-Threshold Model.

          President s Message -- Bill Mills issues a call for Congressional
action on HLW Environmental Standards and suggests a division of
responsibilities for EPA, DOE, and NRC.

          Letters to the Editor -- There s more on the linear, no-threshold
model and the League of Women Voters responds to Charlie Willis  review of
the League s book, The Nuclear Waste Primer.

          Reviews -- Joyce Davis reviews a  pro-nuclear-power  book by a
nuclear engineer; John Johnson and Dan Strom summarize the NRPB s new
document, Risks of Radiation-Induced Cancer at Low Doses and Low Dose Rates
for Radiation Protection Purposes; and Patrick Papin highlights the uses of a
new NRPB slide series on radon.

          Section News -- The Power Reactor Section announces six
scholarships for 1995/96. Photos of the winners and their professors are
included.

     The December issue also has another Joyce Davis crossword puzzle, a flow
diagram of  Reference Baby , comments by Frank Mass
 on the MIT 32P
contamination, and some good Andrew Toos and Al Goodwyn cartoons.

     The January issue will have a few surprises. If you d like to submit an

November.
