Midwest Chapter Meeting




The Midwest Chapter of the Health Physics Society is hosting a 
memorial lecture for Francis R. Shonka, Ph.D. This lecture will be
presented by his son, Joseph Shonka, Ph.D., health physics with
Shonka Research Associates, consulting nuclear engineering firm
near Atlanta, Ga.

Following the lecture, Dr. Shonka will exhibit several historic
scientific instruments from Illinois Benedictine College's collection.

This collection includes mirrors used by Michelson & Morley in the
speed of ligh t experiment, quartz fiber balance scale built by the
Metallurgical Lab during the war to weigh the first plutonium at
Oak Ridge, electrometers, and other interesting and unique instruments.

Francis Shonka, Ph.D. is remembered for may contributions during
his distinguished career:

1.	developed first survey meeter used for alpha activity WWII
2.	developed tissue, muscle, bone and air equivalent conducting
	plastics that formed the basis of modern dosimetry
3.	developed several classes of ionization chambers still used
	today (in US the rad, gray, or roentgen have first step
	traceability to NBS to this type of chamber
4.	developed a direct reading dosimeter
5.	during the 60s, developed most sensitive electrometer in 
	the world
