Re: Re[2]- MSDS for radiolog
Reply to: RE>Re[2]: MSDS for radiological ha
The OSHA reg that applies is 29CFR 1910.1200, "Hazard Communication" (HAZCOM).
The exemptions listed in the HAZCOM standard do not list radioactive
materials.
The HAZCOM standard does not mention radioactive materials either. This would
exempt radioactive materials by omission.
Again, the vendor mentioning a radionuclide in an MSDS is to be commended as
acting within the spirit of the HAZCOM standard and as good risk management.
These opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect on those of the
University of California, LLNL, or USDOE.

I can't give you the reference, but I know that OSHA does not require
MSDS for items or devices containing radioactive mateiral. The only
MSDS, if you want to call it that, are usually accompanied with
radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine studies. This could be
the begining of something and might catch on...mike coogen sends

Including radiological considerations in an MSDS makes sense from the liability
point of view.

I have just received a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) from a vendor for a
device containing tritium; this MSDS addresses the radiological hazards rather
than chemical/physical hazards. It has been my understanding that OSHA
specifically exempts radioactive materials from MSDS requirements. Can anyone
confirm this and provide me with a reference citation for this exemption?
